With just days remaining before Signing Day, Nebraska seems to be floundering with 21 recruits. Numerous scholarship offers have been made to recruits, and in the past week, several of them have turned down the Huskers in favor of other programs - in some cases, rivals.
Adding to the frustration is the revelation that several potential Huskers will not be attending Nebraska because of grades issues. They might end up in scarlet and creme eventually, but for the time being, they're of no help to Nebraska.
The freefall has been ongoing since Thursday, when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul announced his intent to sign with South Florida over Nebraska. It had been believed that Pierre-Paul would become a Husker, especially since his community college coach had close ties to defensive coordinator Carl Pelini and didn't think there was a better option than Nebraska. But the Huskers lost out.
L'Damian Washington was another recruit analysts strongly believed would commit to Nebraska. He was originally a Louisiana Tech commitment before having a breakout senior season and realizing he could land a spot at a BCS school. Rivals.com had said it would be a big surprise if the wide receiver didn't commit to Nebraska. Saturday, he announced he would be attending Missouri.
So what's next? Inside linebacker Eric Martin out in California is set to announce his decision this week sometime, perhaps in advance of signing day. He's choosing between the Wildcats and NU. He's got three high school teammates set to sign with Arizona; that may not bode well for Nebraska. It's believed Nebraska is the front-runner for him, but the Huskers are 0-for-2 this week in those situations.
With four scholarships yet to be dished out, there's reasonable uncertainty about how the rest of this signing period will play out. Losing Martin will be a big blow, because he might be one of the last recruits of significance Nebraska has its foot in the door with. Beyond that, the quality of recruits drops sharply, and there's no telling whether they'll even elect to fill out their 25 slots.
It wouldn't be a tremendous letdown. You don't want to give out scholarships to players who don't deserve them, particularly when you have in-state players willing to walk on. It will be interesting to see if any walk-ons get frustrated with having to pay their own way when scholarships go unclaimed. I think it's a strong possibility that Nebraska won't hand out a full 25, and that's just as well, given the 85-scholarship limit.
Without any question, it'd be nice to see them end on a strong note but there is also no denying this is a very disappointing class. Many insiders in the SEC ranks have always said Coach Pelini is a pretty poor recruiter and unfortunately for those in Lincoln it is ringing true in Husker land.
